Evidence for Asphericity in the Type IIn Supernova 1998S

چکیده
We present optical spectropolarimetry obtained at the Keck-II 10-m telescope on 1998 March 7 UT along with total flux spectra spanning the first 494 days after discovery (1998 March 2 UT) of the peculiar type IIn supernova (SN) 1998S. The SN is found to exhibit a high degree of linear polarization, implying significant asphericity for its continuum-scattering environment. Prior to removal of the interstellar polarization, the polarization spectrum is characterized by a flat continuum (at p ≈ 2%) with distinct changes in polarization associated with both the broad (FWZI & 20, 000 km s) and narrow (unresolved, FWHM < 300 km s) line emission seen in the total flux spectrum. When analyzed in terms of a polarized continuum with unpolarized broadline recombination emission, an intrinsic continuum polarization of p ≈ 3% results (the highest yet found for a SN), suggesting a global asphericity of & 45% from the oblate, electron-scattering dominated models of Höflich (1991). The smooth, blue continuum evident at early times is shown to be inconsistent with a reddened, single-temperature blackbody, instead having a color temperature that increases with decreasing wavelength. Broad emission-line profiles with distinct blue and red peaks are seen in the total flux spectra at later times, perhaps suggesting a disk-like or ring-like morphology for the dense (ne ≈ 10 7 cm) circumstellar medium. Implications of the circumstellar scattering environment for the spectropolarimetry are discussed, as are the effects of uncertain removal of interstellar polarization. Subject headings: circumstellar matter — polarization — stars: mass-loss — supernovae: individual (SN 1998S) — techniques: polarimetric

Bi-polar Supernova Explosions
We discuss the optical spectropolarimetry of several core-collapse supernovae, SN 1996cb (Type IIB), SN 1997X (Type Ic), and SN 1998S (Type IIn). The data show polarization evolution of several spectral features at levels from 0.5% to above 4%. The observed line polarization is intrinsic to the supernovae and not of interstellar origin. These data suggest that the the distribution of ejected ma...
متن کاملDetection of CO and Dust Emission in Near-Infrared Spectra of SN 1998S
Near-infrared spectra (0.95 – 2.4 μm) of the peculiar Type IIn supernova 1998S in NGC 3877 from 95 to 355 days after maximum light are presented. K -band data taken at days 95 and 225 show the presence of the first overtone of CO emission near 2.3 μm, which is gone by day 355. An apparent extended blue wing on the CO profile in the day 95 spectrum could indicate a large CO expansion velocity (≈...
متن کاملProbing the Geometry of Supernovae with Spectropolarimetry
We present results from a spectropolarimetric survey of young supernovae completed at the Keck Observatory, including at least one example from each of the major supernova types: Ia (1997dt), Ib (1998T, 1997dq), Ib/c-pec (1997ef), IIn (1997eg), and II-P (1997ds). All objects show evidence for intrinsic polarization, suggesting that asphericity may be a common feature in young supernova atmosphe...
متن کاملSpectropolarimetric Observations of Supernovae
We briefly review the existing database of supernova spectropolarimetry, concentrating on recent data and on results from our group’s research. Spectropolarimetry provides the only direct known probe of early-time supernova geometry. To obtain reliable conclusions, however, it is very important to correctly account for interstellar polarization. We find that Type IIn supernovae (SNe IIn) tend t...
متن کاملOn the source of the late-time infrared luminosity of SN 1998S and other type II supernovae
We present late-time near-infrared (NIR) and optical observations of the type IIn SN 1998S. The NIR photometry spans 333–1242 days after explosion, while the NIR and optical spectra cover 333–1191 days and 305–1093 days respectively. The NIR photometry extends to the M -band (4.7 μm), making SN 1998S only the second ever supernova for which such a long IR wavelength has been detected. The shape...
